What happens when you sow a seed? I'm keeping track!

Growing plants that are considered 'indoor plants' for most people is what this page is all about. Check out how I sowed a range of different seeds and what happens after that!
Thinking of sowing seeds yourself? Great, do it!! Be sure to consider the basics for a better result.

I wrote about a fast-moving plant before, in my article on carnivorous plants : the Venus Flytrap. The dancing plant is also a fast-moving plant, albeit not as fast as the flytrap. Yet it can be seen with the naked eye! I sowed some of these plants and made some timelapses, see the video below.

This tree originally grows in the middle and south of Africa. It is a deciduous tree that can reach a height of 12 to 15 meters and produces large, black seed pods containing the seeds. Of course that will never happen in my living room... A few years ago I sowed some of those seeds and took some snapshots during germination. That was very easy! Now, just over 2 years later, I have two little trees left.

What to consider when sowing a seed?

Some seeds are ease peasy (yes, peas are easy!), others are divas of the worst kind. Information on seed packages might be very limited, so be sure to find the right information! Some things to take in account:
holding_sprout
Warmth & humidity?
Some seeds just need warmth and high humidity, others need a cold period in order to germinate when it's warmer again.
Substrate?
Does you seed or seedling need a sandy substrate or is regular potting soil doing the job?
Scarification / stratification?
Do your seeds need a treatment? In nature, your seeds might be undergoing a trip trough an animal's digestive system or a period of heavy rainfall and heat.
Sowing depth & light?
Bigger seeds are sown deeper, smaller seeds might just need a bit of sand sprinkled on top. Or maybe nothing at all: some seeds require light to germinate!
